What does a volunteer do?

1. Attend regular walkabouts
  • You will be assigned to a regional team based on what's most convenient for you

  • Either on a regular or ad-hoc basis, depending on your availability

  • Befriend our street sellers

  • Help sellers with small, manageable tasks e.g. getting food

  • Escalate issues that may require our further assistance

2. Ad-hoc Signpost-wide projects

Goodie Bag Distributions

  • Distributions occur on a quarterly basis in collaboration with Lions Befrienders, typically during holiday periods

  • We aim to spread festive joy among our
sellers and directly improve their standard of living through material support.

Meals with Sellers

  • Invite sellers for meals, especially during festive periods or birthdays, and engage in deeper conversations

  • The purpose of the meal is to spread joy and befriend the seller by getting to know them personally

Outings with Sellers

  • Regional Teams may bring our sellers out during festive periods to celebrate the occasion with them

  • Outings are initiated with sellers
whom volunteers are more familiar with, both to ensure their safety and to maximise impact

Volunteer Testimonials

As Director of the North region in Signpost Collective, I've had the pleasure of forging close bonds with various elderly and learning their stories.

For CNY, we wanted to spread the festive spirit with our elderly peddler friends, and distributed some CNY themed goodie bags filled with necessities, sponsored by Lions Befrienders. ... Every single one of the reactions I got when I was distributing the goodie bags were filled with genuine joy and surprise. ... Auntie Zai from Yishun, in particular, was very happy about the LB themed flasks. She praised the cup quality, and says she can now get her grandson to bring hot drinks to school.

My journey with SC has also benefitted me massively. I've had the pleasure of spreading our mission with other youth in SUSS, work with like-minded and brilliant people who use their intellect to tirelessly progress SC, and most of all becoming more grateful for what I have. Witnessing hardship firsthand really makes it apparent what you take for granted, even things like having all 4 limbs. And to bring joy to these people, even if it's from a small conversation, or buying them chicken rice for lunch, has brought me much peace of mind.
